WINNIPEG - A Pakistani family that has been living in a Winnipeg church for 18 months has cleared a major hurdle in an attempt to stay in Canada.
The Raza family has been granted temporary resident status, meaning the two adults and six children can now leave the church without fear of being arrested and deported.
The family hopes to eventually gain permanent resident status.
The Razas sought sanctuary at the Crescent Fort Rouge United Church in August 2006, saying they would suffer religious persecution in their native Pakistan.
